Line: The ATTACK OF THE CLONES of
HOBBIT movies, THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG is considerably more rousing than AN
UNEXPECTED JOURNEY with nowhere near the energy, depth and sheer cinematic
prowess of the preceding LOTR trilogy. It’s an overly produced, mechanically
manufactured, energetically popcorn munchable middle installment that will
surely entertain…yet never fully engage.
At almost three hours, they’ve once again decided to take the longest
route possible from point A to B, but it’s decisive focus on action ensures
that we’ll get by and endure much less talking, walking and bickering along the
way (it’s still present, just not nearly
as much)… We’re also privy to a few
great action sequences and a more adventurous spirit, but saddled with a few
too many storylines that contain little emotion and even less sense of true
danger. You should definitely get your
money’s worth - but we’ve been here and it now kind of feels like we’re going
back again…

Good review Brian. Wasn't great, but was still a little bit better than the first, which is better than not being better than it I guess, right? I don't know. My feelings for this movie just aren't that strong to begin with.
I'm with you, Dan. They entertain to some extent but don't even hold an Elfin torch to the LOTR trilogy...
